Web Expert Request

As I conduct research on Web Accessibility within Higher Education, I am faced with the question of what defines a Web Expert.

I would define a Web Expert as someone that has experience designing Web pages and sites. However, this generic definition does not allow for credibility in my research. Do they have a degree in Web Design? Do they have their own business or work for a company? Have they received Accessibility training? Is their a minimum number of years in the field required? If they work for a company, does the company require accessible design? I have been looking for answers in the literature but am not finding any so now I call on the community… Does anyone have any input?

Looking forward to your input!

The Beginning

Welcome and thank you for visiting,

I am beginning this blog and related business with the goal of positively impacting accessibility on the internet for individuals with disabilities. It will take some time to develop a business site that is fully functioning; however, when completed it will serve as a resource for individuals with disabilities,  Web developers new to the topic, and business owners looking for guidance on what to do and how to do it.

In the meantime and beyond, this communication will serve as an outlet for communication with the public and colleagues that I may not otherwise be able reach. The intention is to share and discuss topics of and about Web Accessibility that will range from problem solving tips to current research, from development do’s and don’ts  found by my partner to experiences I find while conducting my own research.

The idea to begin an Accessibility consultation and development business began several years ago when I started my Doctorate in Education program and over the last year has been molded into what will unfold before you in the next few months. I have devoted my adult life to assisting individuals with disabilities as they strive to gain independence through knowledge and skills. In the last year, I have been conducting an extensive literature review on the topic of Web Accessibility in Higher Education. What I have found has made me  broaden this plight to the public sector.

Just this week, the Department of Justice issued an advance notice that they will begin to investigate Web Accessibility standards as an amendment to the current Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) of 1990. While this statement was released almost 20 years to the day after its initial inception, excitement was everywhere I looked on the internet. ADA Web Accessibility Standards will impact the public sector for the first time in the United States. The question now, is what will they use as their guide? W3C? Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act? Time will tell.

For now, I look forward to taking this incredible journey with all of you.
